Self-rostering in healthcare
In the ideal case self-rostering gives employees an opportunity to plan their own shifts and hence combine work and personal life seamlessly. In self-rostering employees pick their own shifts while typically following commonly agreed rules.
In practice self-rostering requires very specific conditions and mindset to work well. In addition the process takes a lot of time from both employees and the roster manager(s).
All too often self-rostering ends up in a situation, where completing rosters is difficult and employees need to make a lot of sacrifices with regard to their original wishes.
Because of this, the original idea of autonomous employees often fades away and required compromises or even outright competition between employees have a marked effect on both well-being at work and work-life balance.
